Yemen is located on the Arabian
Peninsula, across the Red Sea from northern Africa, and was the
first site of farmed coffee cultivation. Coffee was introduced
in the 6th century by traders from the Harrar region of
Ethiopia.
Yemen has a unique coffee culture.
Exporters do not buy from farms, but through an extensive
network of middlemen. Local buyers receive coffee in the pod,
the entire dried cherry, and that is stored, usually in
underground caverns. The coffee bean actually exported is
usually the oldest of their stocks. This is the way it has
always been. Yemeni growers are not hurt by this system with so
many middlemen, largely because the coffee land under
cultivation is limited and the crop is in such high
demand.
Although none of the Yemen coffee is
officially certified organic, it is all grown using traditional
methods, with no chemicals.
Yemeni coffee beans are among the
most distinct and prized coffees in the world - earthy,
complex, and pungent. Give this distinctive coffee a try, and
don't blame us if you become addicted to its unusual
taste!
