Sumatra is
probably the best known of the Indonesian coffees, and
has been grown on the island since the
1700s. With little regional distinction between
coffee beans produced in different areas of
Sumatra, Estate coffees (from a particular farm) are
rare. Most coffee is produced around the Lake Toba
region.
Sumatran coffee
beans are not often sold by region, because the regional
differences are not that distinct. Rather, the quality of the
picking, preparation and processing of the coffee determines
much of the character of this coffee.
All Sumatran coffee
beans are sold as Mandheling, which is simply the
Indonesian ethnic group most involved in coffee production
in the South Tapanuli region.
