The history of coffee is closely tied to
the history of Puerto Rico. First brought to the island in
1736, the Spanish immigrants who settled on the island
relegated coffee to a secondary role for most of the 18th
century.
During the early part of the 19 century,
immigrants from Corsica settled in the southwestern mountains
of the island, mostly around a town called Yauco. They brought
forth the idea of growing coffee beans in these high
mountains, and by 1860s they dominated the coffee industry on
the island. Now the mountain town of Yauco is known as "El
Pueblo del Café" (coffee city).
Due to its close ties to the United
States, growing coffee beans in Puerto Rico is a high cost
operation. Just like Hawaii Kona, Puerto Rico's labor costs
reflect U.S. Government standards and environmental policies.
The coffee is air-frieghted in small quantities to the
US.
