Large-scale coffee growing began in
Nicaragua in the 1850s, and by 1870 coffee beans were the
principal export. From a specialty coffee perspective, the
isolation Nicaragua's coffee industry suffered during political
embargoes was both an advantage and a disadvantage. Traditional
coffee varieties and agricultural practices were preserved, but
the infrastructure necessary to bring a high quality coffee to
market hardly existed.
Nicaraguan coffee bean production is
centered in the northern part of the central highlands and also
the hilly volcanic region around Jinotepe.
Distinctively large in size, Nicaraguan
Maravilla coffee is grown in jungles neighboring Guatemala. The
microclimate and topography of this area allow production of
high quality coffee beans in fertile soils and natural shade
cover from the surrounding forest.
