Mexican coffee is grown from the central
to southern regions of the country, and because of this Mexico
coffees vary a great deal. With Colombia not too far away, you
would think Mexican coffee beans would be of the strong,
full-bodied variety, but that's not the case.
As with Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee
beans, altitude adds that extra ingredient. Coffee growing
began in Mexico in the 19th century having come over from
Jamaica so it's not surprising that the coffee beans here are
of such quality. The world's finest arabica coffees grow at
high altitude.
Altura is Spanish for height, and Mexican
Altura coffee is grown in the high volcanic soils of the
Coatepec region of Mexico.
Plumas arabica coffee originated in the
Pluma Mountain in the 1800's. This singular variety of coffee
is world renowned .
Maragogype has coffee beans 2 to 3
times larger than other arabica beans. In Mexico, it is grown
at 1400 meters in the Chiapas State close to the Pacific
coast and the Guatemala border. They are sometimes referred to
as "elephant beans" and are best drunk without milk.
