Honduran coffee has in
the past been absent from the top ranks of the specialty
coffee market, but that is changing. Honduras has a past
history of growing cheap arabica for quantity and price,
not quality. Due to the great efforts of NGO
organizations, the Honduran government and the various
quality initiatives such as Cup of Excellence, the quality
of Honduras coffee beans has vastly
improved.
It has all the environmental
factors on its side: soil, altitude and climate. It's neighbors
- Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua - have sophisticated
coffee production. But what is lacking is good coffee
processing and transporting, financial capital and a distinct
"brand" in the consumer market.
The Honduras is one of the poorest
countries in Latin America. The economy is based mostly on
agriculture, and the leading export - coffee beans- accounted
for 22% of total export revenues in 1999.
