The first arabica coffee plants in Costa
Rica were imported from Ethiopia in 1779.
In the nineteenth century, the Costa
Rican government strongly encouraged coffee production, and
offered farmers plots of land for anybody who wanted to harvest
the plants. The coffee plantation system in the country
therefore developed largely as result of the government's open
policy. Coffee beans soon became a major source of revenue, and
are currently Costa Rica's number one export.
The finest Costa Rica coffee beans
are typically grown at altitudes of 1200 to 1700 metres.
Tarrazu coffee comes from San Marcos de Tarrazu in the
highlands outside San Jose.
