The
Brazilian coffee industry started in 1727, when coffee beans
were smuggled into the country from French Guinea. In the early
19th and 20th centuries, Brazil was the biggest producer of
coffee beans.
Today,
Brazil still produces almost a third of all the world's coffee
beans. Over 5 million people are employed in the cultivation
and harvesting of over 3 billion coffee plants; it is a much
more labour-intensive culture than other crops of the same
region such as sugar cane, as it is not subject to automation
and requires constant attention.
Brazilian
Santos coffee is named after the port of Santos, not a coffee
growing region.
